Overview
Our custom dashboards and analytics feature offers a transformative approach to managing HR data for customers with larger employee bases and complex HR needs. Administrators at your company can view key performance indicators (KPIs), access important data, and conduct their own analyses without the need for SQL coding.
This streamlined approach to analytics reduces reliance on external systems by consolidating important data into a single, interactive dashboard with data visualizations, providing greater visibility into your company's processes and needs. Say goodbye to tedious manual work!
This feature is found in the reporting section of BambooHR. From the left sidebar menu, navigate to Reports and then click Dashboards. You will have access to several pre-built dashboards created by BambooHR, pertaining to compensation, diversity, hiring, and turnover and retention data. Additionally, you can create custom dashboards. The following are some key terms to know when using this feature.
Dashboards
Administrators have the ability to quickly and easily view data visualizations through comprehensive dashboards, allowing them to gain insights at a glance. Each dashboard serves as a presentation layer for data visualizations, which are built from workbooks, and with just one click, any workbook can be transformed into a new dashboard or added to an existing dashboard.
Topics
Topics are query-modeled datasets built by our internal teams at BambooHR. The following are current topics you can use to build a dashboard upon:
- Employee Compensation
- Employee Diversity
- Employee Turnover
- Hiring Applicants
- Hiring Job Openings
Workbooks
Workbooks enable you to transform data into interactive data visualizations that provide actionable insights for your company's success.
They can be added to an existing dashboard or a new one. Each workbook is where you select from a predefined topic (dataset) and then create data visualizations by querying the database with filters, adding or editing fields, and promoting formulas. Tabs at the bottom of a dashboard (Query) represents individual data visualizations. A workbook has two modes:
- Viewing: View the latest saved version of the workbook without making changes. This mode is accessible from the Dashboards section of the Reports tab (Reports > Dashboards).
- Editing: Make changes to the workbook. You do not need to worry about losing your progress since changes will be auto-saved as you go. Changes made in this mode will also update the associated dashboard. This mode is accessible from the Manage Dashboards page (Reports > Dashboards > Manage Dashboards).
Data visualization types

Within a workbook, you have data visualization types (i.e., charts) to choose from based on the data you have. You can move fields to different areas of the chart setup, such as the x-axis or y-axis, depending on the chart type.
This feature does not currently support custom fields reporting and exporting custom BambooHR reports. Instead, it is recommended to transition existing reports into dashboards for improved data clarity. Additionally, integration with external data sources is limited to BambooHR.
