Custom Tabs

Purpose: To show you how you can create a custom tab in your BambooHR account.


Important: If you have the Core or Pro package, you can create custom tabs using our custom tab builder, as described in this help guide.

If you have the Advantage package, the Account Owner or Full Admin user can submit a request to our Customer Support team to add a custom tab. Before submitting a request, please review this section to ensure your request meets our guidelines and have all the necessary information included. Interested in upgrading your package? Add a custom tab

Need customization ideas? BambooHR offers several customization options for storing your data and creating a system that can help you track the information that is important to your company and your employees. Watch this video for some ideas on what you can track in BambooHR.

Please note that custom tabs are not specific to just one employee profile. Once you add a custom tab, the system will automatically apply it to ALL employee profiles. However, who can access a custom tab will depend on the access level settings you have set up for that tab.

If you need to add a tab that is not one of our standard tabs to an employee profile, you can use the custom tab builder in your account. First, navigate to your employee profile, click More, and then select Customize Tabs at the bottom of the dropdown menu. This will open the custom tab builder, where you can add, edit, reorganize, or remove tabs on the employee profile. 

To create a new custom tab, click Add Tabs and select +New Custom Tab.

Enter a name for the custom tab and then click Save.

  1. By default, the custom tab does not have fields or tables. To add one, click Add Custom Field or Add Custom Table.
  2. Once the tab has fields/tables, you can reorder them by clicking Customize Layout > Reorder Fields.

You also have the option to add or edit custom fields/tables from Settings > Custom Fields & Tables.


Grant access to custom tabs

Only the Account Owner and Full Admin users can automatically access custom tabs. As an admin, you can determine if users in other access levels can view a specific custom tab on their employee profile. 

Navigate to Settings > Access Levels and select Access Level Settings within the specific access level you are reviewing. Under the What Can People with this Access Level See? section, you can determine who can or cannot access the custom tab and its fields. 


Rename or remove a custom tab

  1. To rename a custom tab, navigate to More > Customize Tabs. Click the pencil icon next to the custom tab name, type in the updated name, and save your changes.
  2. To remove a custom tab from the employee profile view, navigate to More > Customize Tabs. Click on the X next to the custom tab name. Please keep in mind that you can re-add the custom tab from the Add Tabs dropdown menu.

If preferred or required, you can submit a custom tab request. With each request, our Customer Support team considers if the requested tab would be user-friendly and set you up for long-term success in BambooHR. Please note that we may not be able to fulfill your customization request if it does not provide a great user experience or would put your data at risk. The following examples are what we will not create customizations for: 

  • Usernames and passwords
  • Full credit card numbers
    • We only store the last four digits.
  • Bank PIN
  • Custom Social Security or personal identifying numbers
  • Custom Time Tracking tabs and fields
  • Custom Performance tabs and fields
  • Custom development work
    • BambooHR does not provide custom development work to alter your account.
  • Editing existing standard fields and tables
    • We need to keep those consistent for filtering purposes.

Our team can add additional tabs to your account to organize your custom fields and tables. If your custom tab request meets our guidelines, please provide our Customer Support team with the following information in your request:

Example

I would like to add a custom tab titled "Project Assignments" to my account to better manage and track project-related information. This tab will help us organize this information with the following fields:

  • Project Name
  • Assigned Employees
  • Start Date
  • End Date
  • Project Status
  • Notes/Comments
