Shift Differentials in BambooHR Payroll

Shift Differentials in the Pre-Payroll Hours Breakdown

In the pre-payroll process, shift differentials live on the Timesheets tab. If you click on the tab, you'll see all of your employee's time tracking information. For a complete breakdown of this tab and the table on the right, check out this help guide. In the example below, you'll notice Jennifer Caldwell worked 32 hours on the "Executive Weekend" shift differential.

Payroll Overview Page

Upon clicking Start Payroll or Continue Payroll, you can add additional hours and attribute them to their corresponding shift by hovering over the proper employee and clicking Add Hours. Then, simply click the name of shift differential, determine if the hours are regular, overtime, or double overtime, and enter the number of hours.

Did you know shift differentials can also be used for Exempt employees?

Payment Details Page

Adding hours to a specific shift works the same on the payments detail page as it does on the payroll overview page. Simply click Add Hours and select the correct shift differential. Then, enter the hours and wages. If you add hours in this way, the hours field will automatically be set to 0 and the wages field will calculate based on the employee's wage and the percentage or dollar amount you determined when setting up the shift differential.

Can I combine projects and tasks with shift differentials during my payroll run?

Currently, we do not support manually combining projects and tasks with shift differentials. However, we'll send a warning your way before allowing you to delete a combined rate. If you do manage to delete a combined rate you can reset the payroll or employee to get the combined rate data back.

How are pay rates calculated if there are multiple levels of different pay rates?

Pay rates in BambooHR are calculated in the following order: Base Rate or Project/Task (if applicable) + Shift Differential x OT or DT

I imported data that has project pay and shift differentials. Which rate will you use?

If the import included a pay rate, the system will honor the pay rate included in the import. If no rate is imported, then Payroll will pull the base rate or project rate from the employee's profile and the differential rate from Settings.
